About Fredericksburg Texas
Founded in 1846, Fredericksburg was the second colony founded by The Society for the Protection of German Immigrants (Mainzer Adelsverein). Baron Ottfried Hans von Meusebach led 120 Germans to this spot in the midst of Comanche country and named it for Prince Frederick of Prussia. When they arrived it was discovered that the land also belonged to the native american indians. With few other options except work with the situation, the Germans became the only immigrant group to successfully negotiate peace with the Indians.
The Meusebach-Comanche Treaty of 1847 is unique in that it was never broken by either side to this day. This treaty is still celebrated annually in Fredericksburg at the Friendship Pow Wow held in May of each year.
